To my knowledge they're all the Western (nominate I think) (sub)species.

Thanks, I figured that was the case but I wanted to double check.

I'm rather disgruntled that I visited the Caldwell Zoo today as well, and saw neither of the two species that I could have gotten points for :(.

Do to TLD pointing out the obvious with counting bison earlier, I'll be removing them from my list.

That said, a good few new species courtesy of Bronx:
7) Père David's Deer Elaphurus davidianus
8) Southern White Rhinoceros Ceratotherium simum
9) Lowland Nyala Tragelaphus angasii
10) Thomson's Gazelle Eudorcas thomsonii
11) Grèvy's Zebra Equus grevyi
12) Greater Malay Chevrotain Tragulus napu
13) Malayan Tapir Tapirus indicus
14) Nubin Ibex Capra nubiana
15) Okapi Okapia johnstoni
16) Red River Hog Potamochoerus porcus
17) Blackbuck Antilope cervicapra
18) Slender-Horned Gazelle Gazella leptoceros
19) Chital Deer Axis axis
20) North Indian Muntjac Muntiacus vaginalis
21) Burmese Brow-Antlered Deer Panolia thamin
22) Indian Sambar Cervus unicolor
23) Formosan Deer Cervus taiouanus
24) Przewalski's Wild Horse Equus ferus przewalskii
25) Tufted Deer Elaphodus cephalophus
26) Indian Hog Deer Axis porcinus
27) Gaur Bos gaurus
28) Himalayan Tahr Hemitragus jemlahicus
29) Markhor Capra falconeri

Somehow, for the third year in a row, I've landed on 29 species! However, thankfully I will almost definitely be seeing many more species before the year is out, especially considering I missed at least three species at Bronx to begin with.

~Thylo:cool:

As mentioned before I am readding American Bison:
30) American Bison Bos bison

Just a few more from the Los Angeles Zoo:
31) Red-Flanked Duiker Cephalophus rufilatus
32) Black Duiker Cephalophus niger
33) Southern Gerenuk Litocranius walleri
34) Mountain Tapir Tapirus pinchaque
35) Reeves's Muntjac Muntiacus reevesi
36) Common Hippopotamus Hippopotamus amphibius
37) Calamian Deer Hyelaphus calamianensis
38) Visayan Warty Pig Sus cebifrons
39) Chinese Goral Nemorhaedus griseus
40) Sichuan Takin Budorcas tibetana
41) Masai Giraffe Giraffa tippelskirchi
42) Speke's Gazelle Gazella spekei
43) North Sulawesi Babirusa Babyrousa celebensis
44) Bighorn Sheep Ovis canadensis
45) Baird's Tapir Tapirus bairdii
46) Bongo Tragelaphus eurycerus

I am correct in my thinking that the US population of goral is Naemorhedus griseus arnouxianus correct?

If anyone's wondering I will not be visiting the San Diegos unfortunately, which would've skyrocketed my list for sure.

~Thylo:cool:

A visit to Nanjing Zoo yesterday yielded nothing new for my list. Surprisingly, the zoo only has three ungulate species.

I'm going to repost my whole list. Even though we are now using the split/unsplit mechanic (which I fully support), as we're halfway it's a good idea anyway. If anyone spots any other mistakes please let me know.

Somewhat to my surprise, I remain in the running. I think that being in Asia is actually helping me because there is no overarching body with phase-out/coordination policies. As long as I keep moving and visiting I stand a chance.

One point: I am assuming if we add a species as pre-split, but then subsequently gain the ability to list it as two or more splits we can amend our lists. This seems reasonable I think. As an example I have now added the Thamin I saw in Singapore as they are actually a full split post-Groves.

Sooooooooo question. Where I live there is a series of US Bison Preserves; by all means these animals are in public view though not necessarily in a zoo situation per se. Could they still count, or would it be best to leave them off?

Would it be best to just consider these farms?

If you initially decide not to follow the splits and post a species as pre-split, you can't go back and split them just because you ended up see another (sub)species. If you previously listed them as pre-split without knowing, though, no harm in changing it.

Also, I would say it's fair to make it a rule that you either follow the splits completely or not at all. So no picking and choosing which species you'll split and which you won't (with the exception of maybe giraffes since their splits were in discussing before the Groves list).

@Fireplume, are the animals living in captivity or in a wild/semi-wild situation. Sounds as though they wouldn't be countable.

Well I don't know if it counts and I am not entirely sure of it was a whitetail deer and I don't even know if it counts but I went on a camp and it was kept there for people to let it as well as an emu, 2 donkeys and a horse.

I'd like to respectfully and cordially protest both of these decisions :)

The first is quite straightforward I think. It's dependent on the second point but I'll address it first anyway. If you don't allow people to amend their lists then you are directly incentivising a lack of updates. The person who waits to December 31st to upload their entire list is giving themself the best chance of a high score. This game is more fun if we see regular posts, and people pulling ahead and falling behind as visits are made. As long as people clearly signal what they have changed and why I don't think it will add any confusion either.

I concede that the second one is a bit more of a subjective judgement call. However, surely we should be choosing rules that allow people to count as many of the species they see as possible. I don't think having to choose split or not-split, both of which will remove entries from peoples' lists, is a fun mechanic, especially when most of us won't know until the end of the year which is the 'correct' (highest scoring) decision.

Lastly, why is it fairer that people either follow the splits or not in their entirety? This seems like an arbitrary statement, given that everyone will be bound by the same rules regardless. If anything, having two groups of competitors (splitters and not) is more likely to introduce unfairness.

Very much enjoying the challenge, as previously stated. I just want to make sure the rules are as inclusive, both people- and species-wise, as possible.

:)

The proper identification for these things I'd say is a game ranch, though NOT Texas style, hahaha. If they aren't they aren't, just wanted clarification. :) Thank you!

After a visit to Natuurpark Lelystad I can add a further 3 species:
49 ) Eurasian elk ( Alces alces )
50 ) European wild boar ( Sus scrofa )
51 ) Wisent ( Bos bonasus )

Also discovered I had forgot just another species for Beekse Bergen - and also seen today at Natuurpark Lelystad :
52 ) Przewalski horse ( Equus przewalskii )

By visiting two small German collections I'm able to add 4 new species ( from which 1 even is a Lifer ! ) to my 2016-list :
Neu Münster :
53 ) Alpine chamois ( Rupicapra rupicapra )
54 ) Mouflon (Ovis orientalis )

Tiergarten Kleve :
55) Asian wild ass ( Equus hemionus )
56 ) African wild ass ( Equus africanus )
Couldn't remember ever having seen an African wild ass and by checking Zootierliste I discovered it has been kept at Antwerp VERY long ago and in the Netherlands not a single animal has ever kept in a zoo ! Also the German collections with this species I've either not visited (yet) or was there at the wrong times which means I had a Lifer last weekend in a small zoo in which you wouldn't expect it.
