You can sometimes see animals in Paignton's hospital area if they are in the small outside cage you can see over a fence, but its partly hidden. Still, if they were using that you could still be in with a chance.:) Better go soon though!

I looked yesterday and I saw a cherry-crowned mangabey.

Following on from the "only ones in Britain" thread, which collections would have to be visited to view the only ones in the UK, for a start i would suggest HWP for Japanese macaque and RSCC eventually for their tarsiers.

You'd actually be incorrect for the former - the rather dodgy place in Wales has Japanese macaque too, along with a few other oddities.

HWP is not the only place with Japanese Macaque,as a certain world class primate centre in South Wales is suppose to have them as well according to zootierlist!

The Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary had a single Japanese macaque housed with a long-tailed macaque when I visited last year . A single black-crested mangabey ( second presumably died ) was housed with the Colombian spider monkey ( the mandrill that had also lived with them had died ) . They did report receiving another mandrill last year in the local press . I have never seen the mona monkey that they reported as receiving a few years ago .

Not certain what species of baboons they have , apart from sacred . I think they came from Portugal and were labelled as olive , but certainly not the colouring usually associated with that species - Western could well be right .

It's not dodgy. It's a nice little place.
I think from your comment that we have a very different view on what a nice place is,when I visited a few years ago the word sh*t hole would not be too strong of a descripition of the place, has to be some of the worse primate accomadation that I have seen in the UK,and that includes going back to the late 1970's and early 1980's!!

Well i quite like it there, and i applaud their work.

After a visit to Colchester today, i have now passed the required 15 mark:
At Linton 3/1/14

1. Mongoose Lemur
2. White-Collared Lemur
3.Crowned Lemur
4.Red Ruffed Lemur

24/1 Colchester

5. Chimpanzee
6. Bornean Orangutan
7. Gelada
8. Mandrill
9. L'hoest Monkey
10. Patas Monkey
11. Cherry crowned Mangabey
12. Eastern B&W Colobus
13. Liontailed Macaque
14. Francois Langur
15. Pileated Gibbon
16. B&W ruffed Lemur

With the important exception of Gorillas;) I'd say Colchester have a very representative range of Old World Primates, perhaps the best(though not the largest) in the UK. Paignton have similar wide range also.

The only thing Colchester is really lacking is any non-lemur prosimians; I reckon a galago species would fit in quite nicely there.

I would say Colchester has possibly the most representative collection of (available) mammals in the UK, only Chester probably comes close.

Agree. despite the often curious( but usually functional) style of enclosure- building, the dead ends and hilly pathways, Colchester boasts an excellent collection mammal-wise- I'd rate it a close second to Chester in that respect.
