The trip back to China for the young Panda YUAN MENG, first of his kind to be born in France, is planned for 4th July 2023. (seen on the official Facebook account of Beauval)

Beauval Zoo has been overcrowded last friday (Ascension Friday), as many touristic sites in France. It broke its attendance record this day, with over 30.000 guests.
It has been reported on local and national press and news websites.
Zoo de Beauval : un record d'affluence à l'Ascension

I went in Beauval yesterday but the attendance was much lower, I didn't experience any difficulty with the crowd to see the animals, to walk across the park nor to wait in the eateries or other places.

About the animals I noticed various (minor) changes :
  • 2 Coscoroba Swans were in the Crane/Stork plain (before a transfer in the South American aviary?)
  • many changes in the main Vivarium : the Mountain Horned Dragons Acanthosaura capra were replaced by a Green Python ; in the former Amazon Tree Boa Corallus hortulana terrarium there's now an Henkel's Leaf-tailed Gecko Uroplatus henkeli ; while the Amazon Tree Boas have replaced the Central Fijian Banded Iguana Brachylophus bulabula (and earlier the Panther Chameleon) and the Green Python in their former exhibits...
  • no Condors nor Black-chested Buzzard-Eagles in the Bird Show "Les Maîtres des Airs"
  • there were the Yellow-knobbed Curassows Crax daubentoni and at least 2 Scarlet Macaws Ara macao in the row of aviaries behind the bird nursery ;
  • a small flock of Ruffs (4-5 birds) has strangely been put in the Indonesian aviary, with a signage for them, although this species isn't at all typical of Indonesia nor SE Asia ;
  • a special signage indicated the presence of American Black Ducks Anas rubripes chicks in the bird nursery, it may be a new species (displayed in the South American aviary, perhaps ?) but these birds are very similar to the Common Mallards and thus may be easily unnoticed.

For the World Turtle Day, Beauval has just published a webpage about the turtles, their conservation and the role played by the Zoo(s) to protect them.
20 species of turtle/tortoise are reported to be kept in Beauval, a couple of them remaining probably in the backstage for now.
But we have to notice the departure of 3 European/Mediterranean species kept until last year : Greek Tortoise Testudo graeca, Hermann's Tortoise T. Hermanni and Turkish Tortoise T. (graeca) ibera. Perhaps they have left the Zoo to prevent hybridizations (they were maintained together in a small outdoor enclosure, with Marginated Tortoises that are still kept).

A bit of news from Beauval, where I went yesterday :
  • 0.0.2 Indian Peafowl (fancy white morph) and 0.0.2 Southern Screamers hatched recently ;
  • birth of 0.2 Sitatungas (mentioned on signage, not seen) ;
  • works in progress in the Malayan Tapir enclosure, with the pool entirely emptied ; the wooden bridge around the enclosure was closed to the public access ;
  • I met a keeper who told me that the transfer of the Coatis to the South American Aviary will be scheduled for this summer ; some time is needed because the Colombian Spider Monkeys and the Giant Anteaters (both species with babies) must be accustomed to share their exhibit before the arrival of a third species (the Coatis) ;
  • the keeper told me that the most recent newborn in the Colombian Spider Monkey group (born this winter) is a female ;
  • I've seen for the first time the pairs of Maguari Storks and Red-legged Seriemas in the South American Aviary.

Many births in late Spring in Beauval (but most of them belong to common species) : 2 White-faced Whistling Ducks, 9 Black-cheeked Lovebirds, 9 Domestic Goats, 2 Crested Partridges, 2 Ringed Teals, 3 Blue-winged Kookaburras, 2 Sitatungas, 7 Checkered Giant Rabbits (domestic breed), 1 Red-whiskered Bulbul, 1 Henkel's Leaf-tailed Gecko, 4 American Black Ducks, 4 White Storks, 3 Yellow-billed Storks, 3 Fulvous Whistling Ducks, 7 Mandarin Ducks, 2 Patagonian Cavies, 1 Asian Glossy Starling.
Some of these births have already been reported in previous posts (Sitatungas, American Black Ducks...).

The young female Queensland KOala WOOLI, born in Beauval, has been brought back from Leipzig Zoo (I don't know the reason).

Departures of the young male Caribbean Manatee CANOUAN (born in Beauval) to the Odense Zoo in Denmark, and of a female Bearded Vulture (very probably the young female SAIA, who hatched in Beauval in 2022) to the Richard Faust Center in Austria.

I've already seen the young King Vulture a month ago.

The new Caracal (that will be joined by a second female individual...) and Servals have been seized from private owners as illegal pets.
