ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2014

Gorilla silverbacks at Port Lympne killed male diana and colobus monkeys during the 1990s after attempted mixings.

The male Gorilla 'Jomie'( Djoum x Lomie, owned by ZSL) killed and partially ate a Colobus Monkey in the old 'tower' ex Chimpanzee age at Port Lympne. He was later sent to London Zoo but died two years later from Hepatitis B. I can only suspect he might have got it from eating the Colobus monkey, as no other cases have been reported of other Gorillas there so affected.

Most places that have kept Monkeys with Gorillas seem to suffer accidents to one or more Monkeys eventually, and then give it up as you outlined. Bristol's with De Brazza's seemed to work initially but then just stopped.

One other I know of is GaiaPark where they have(or had) Black Mangabeys with Gorillas.

IN Gaia the gorila still are mixed with the magnabeys and the young gorilla's play a lot with the mangabeys. In fact, the mangabeys frequently are harassing the young gorilla's but their parents don't interfere.

In Apenheul they are mixed with pata and l'hoëstmeerkat and in Koln with colobus.

The last time I visited, the spider monkeys were indeed housed in the cages that previously connected to Gorilla Kingdom.

Personally, I think they'd be better suited to the Snowdon Aviary, or has this been earmarked for the colobus group in the future? Does Lord Snowdon have any say into what is housed in the aviary or it's future use?

On the subject of mating ... how likely is it that the lions Lucifer & Abi will have another litter. Also what is the likeliehood of the komodo dragons having young ?

Somewhat unlikely - Abi is getting on a bit for a breeding lioness and Lucifer is expected to move to Paignton this year.

I assume this expected move to Paignton for Lucifer isn't just because of the possibility of ZSL London Zoo starting the new exhibit this year?

Thank you very much for posting these; they provide very interesting reading.

While it is always sad to see any old enclosures, with all their rich heritage, go, and sad too that the number of species will reduce - 7 aviaries down to 4 - it is very pleasing that there is focus being give to something other than charismatic megafauna, and there is also no doubt that, even before their emptying, these aviaries were looking more than a little tired.

It would be interesting to know the intention for the species to be sown here, whether there will be any theming or - as was the case in the out-going pheasantry - a hotch-potch of species from around the world.

And yes, of course it would be better if they were building a multi-million pound bird house which would push back the boundaries of avian exhibition, while also showcasing a collection of birds unrivalled this side of Walsrode. But, given the unlikeliness of this, I'll settle for a few pleasant aviaries with a touraco or two and one of the smaller hornbill species.

Paignton don't say either way, but I imagine they would mention if they were only taking him on temporarily?

Believe Abi was born 1999 , Rubii in 2009 with Heidi & Indi born in 2011.

Are the last three all females, and Lucifer's offspring?

If so they might retain them as the basis of their new larger grouping and bring in an unrelated male.

A sensible and overdue development. I particularly like the proposal to remove the raised platform that reduces the flight space in the existing aviaries.
I am sure we could all suggest dozens of suitable occupants for these four aviaries.

Rubi, Heidi and Indi are all females and all are Lucifer's offspring. Rubi was one of the cubs in the first litter that Abi and Lucifer had (I think!), she and her brother (Maximus now in Europe, Lodz, if I remember correctly). Heidi and Indi were the last litter born to Abi and Lucifer.

Is there anything too see in the old elephant house? found it strange for such a big building not to be converted into holding something more suitable

At the moment it is closed. When it was last open there was indoor accommodation for the tapirs ( and recently anoa, prior to that pygmy hippo and camels) and the bearded pigs. There was also a small selection of temporary looking aviary style cages for show animals used in displays plus a rather random
'Zoo World' exhibition which was increasingly out of place. So it was all a bit of a mishmash. No idea if they are working on anything inside at the moment but I know practically all of us have thoughts on what we'd like to see.

Shirokuma, you are referring to the Casson Building I presume?

A) Was it indefinitely closed, meaning some form of refurbishment?
B) No placard / bulletin why it was closed?

Is there any plan to redo / remodel the inside building further?
(I really would like a Tropical Hall that goes alongside the current S.E. Asian animal collection + hopefully eventually new anoa and perhaps babirusa). A tropical hall with reptiles and birds would be amazing and make the building stand out .. more! :)

At the moment there is just a sign saying the building is closed today but this has been up for some time. There's been nothing officially mentioned about anything going on inside.

I agree entirely, you could make it into a South East Asian themed tropical hall without too much difficulty. Even without too many species you could have lots of interpretative stuff about the region, environmental challenges and so on.

When it first closed temporarily I heard it was something to do with Health and Safety ... then I believe they had a sign up saying some building/maintenance was going on ... I suspect someone simply reused an existing sign as I think it said at the time closed in the morning comeback in the afternoon but in reality it wass closed all day.

I wonder whether the closure is simply to give the Tapirs a quiet undisturbed area to retreat into.
If i recall it had indoor areas for the bearded pigs , the tapirs (2 sections - one previously occupied by the anoa) - the red ruffle lemur , a burrowing owl , an armadillo , some meerkats and 3 other species that I forget
