One thing I found out from
@MidwestFan , 4 out of the 6 African Elephant females currently pregnant in the United States are due in 2023. We know Lolly and Jeyai at the Omaha Zoo are 2 of the girls due in 2023 and personally, I honestly didn’t think Jeyai would have a calf given how long it’s been since she had her last calf. And Lolly being a first time mother makes it all the more exciting there.
Regarding Omma I learned something about her recently and that’s she’s been spending a lot of time with Callee. Yesterday one of the keepers at the press conference was pointing out all the elephants that the reporters were seeing and she mentioned Jayei, Lolly, Claire, Sonny, Kiki and Eugenia. Callee and Omma on the other hand can still interact with the herd but they were keeping them separate for whatever reason. That indicates to me that Omma is not pregnant which makes sense because I think as
@Mr.Ivory said yesterday what the Omaha Zoo is trying to do is they’re wanting to make sure not all the females get pregnant at once. Claire and Kiki got pregnant most likely in late 2019-early 2020, Lolly and Jayei got pregnant in 2021, and if they want to make sure the births are paced out it makes sense as to why they’d wait for Omma to start mating Callee and hopefully becomes pregnant in 2022. It also makes sense to me anyway whey she was last to mate with Callee because the other girls are older then her and most of them hadn’t had calves which is why the zoo had them mate with Callee first. I think Omma out of the Swaziland Herd is the youngest aside from the recent calves.
After learning the news though about Omma and Callee being together I don’t think Omma is 1 out of the 6 African Elephant females currently pregnant in the United States. That’s not to say she won’t get pregnant which I think it’s very likely at this point but what I am saying I don’t think at the moment she isn’t.
