North American Asian and African Elephant Populations: Discussion and Speculation

I think it is quite logical that none of the Sedgwick County cows are pregnant yet, as most were born around 2010 (except Simunye), so they are still quite young to have a calf. I kind of have a feeling that we could soon hear a similar amount of pregnancies as in Omaha, so hopefully it will happen.

Since all of their cows are so young, I’d imagine they still won’t be bred for another few years. I think we can expect them to bred similar to Omaha (all at the same time).

who do you think the other 4 are out of the 6 African Elephants we know that are pregnant and due within the next year or so? Also wouldn’t it make sense though for the zoo to have Simunye breed with Ajani considering she hasn’t had a calf in over a decade?

Also, I hate to be the barer of bad news, but unlike Tamani and Callee or the two boys currently at Birmingham Ajani never witnessed natural breeding. This means that we are entirely reliant on natural instinct and Simuye to teach him how to breed. I believe we’ve probably gotten to the point now where she’s shown him the ropes but I’m not at all surprised he’s not bred yet.

If we’re placing bets on the pregnancies I’d bet on Semba, Kianga/Victoria, Simuye, and Nolwazi.

Ajani saw his dad mate and was around when his sister Zahara was born if I remember correctly cause I thinks she born naturally but the others past her birth weren’t. Victoria good luck with that one cause at this point she’s never having a calf of her own I don’t think. Simuye hasn’t had a calf since 2009 so it’s been over 13 years for her, and Nolwazi and also Amahle could have a calf of their own with Vui Musi. Don’t know about Kianga and if Litsemba is pregnant she’s not due until I don’t think till late 2023 - 2024 cause she was mating with Mabu last winter if I remember correctly.

One thing I found out from @MidwestFan , 4 out of the 6 African Elephant females currently pregnant in the United States are due in 2023. We know Lolly and Jeyai at the Omaha Zoo are 2 of the girls due in 2023 and personally, I honestly didn’t think Jeyai would have a calf given how long it’s been since she had her last calf. And Lolly being a first time mother makes it all the more exciting there.

Regarding Omma I learned something about her recently and that’s she’s been spending a lot of time with Callee. Yesterday one of the keepers at the press conference was pointing out all the elephants that the reporters were seeing and she mentioned Jayei, Lolly, Claire, Sonny, Kiki and Eugenia. Callee and Omma on the other hand can still interact with the herd but they were keeping them separate for whatever reason. That indicates to me that Omma is not pregnant which makes sense because I think as @Mr.Ivory said yesterday what the Omaha Zoo is trying to do is they’re wanting to make sure not all the females get pregnant at once. Claire and Kiki got pregnant most likely in late 2019-early 2020, Lolly and Jayei got pregnant in 2021, and if they want to make sure the births are paced out it makes sense as to why they’d wait for Omma to start mating Callee and hopefully becomes pregnant in 2022. It also makes sense to me anyway whey she was last to mate with Callee because the other girls are older then her and most of them hadn’t had calves which is why the zoo had them mate with Callee first. I think Omma out of the Swaziland Herd is the youngest aside from the recent calves.

After learning the news though about Omma and Callee being together I don’t think Omma is 1 out of the 6 African Elephant females currently pregnant in the United States. That’s not to say she won’t get pregnant which I think it’s very likely at this point but what I am saying I don’t think at the moment she isn’t.

Zahara is the daughter of Ali through AI so none of the calves born at the Indianapolis zoo where convinced naturally.

0.1 Amali (Dale x Kubwa) 2000-03-06 - 2003-06-03
1.0 Ajani (Maclean x Ivory) 2000-08-04
1.0 Kedar (Bulwagi x Kubwa) 2005-10-18
0.1 Zahara (Ali x Ivory) 2006-08-31
0.1 Kalina (Jackson x Kubwa) 2011-07-20 - 2019-03-26
0.1 Nyah (Jackson x Ivory) 2012-06-28 - 2019-03-19

Good to know. I thought only some were artificially inseminated. That being said though what are the chances of Ajani being a successful breeder and your thoughts about the situation with Omma?

Zahara was conceived via AI, so you may be right about him seeing Mac mount the cows but he never saw successful breeding. I’m sorry I’m just praying on Victoria at this point. They’ve tried so much it just has to happen. Send her and her sister to Maryland for a month Jesus, like give her a chance with a bull. I didn’t know that about Simuye but Jayei hasn’t had a calf in about a decade and she just got pregnant so there might be hope, especially since she has all of Ajani’s attention. It’s possible that Semba could give birth as early as next year, pregnant cows have been known to allow bulls to mount them. Gosh I hope Vus Musi got the job done because once he gets one pregnant the other should follow soon. I’m shocked Disney hasn’t had any calves in 5 years. Mac and two of the cows are proven and there are two young cows who should have calves by now.

In Europe their are multiple of bulls born through AI like Abu becoming a successful breeding bull, and Ajani has shown breeding behaviour so it is likely that he will become a successful breeding bull.

The situation with Omma is to be expected as she is the youngest breeding female breeding her last would allow her to develope her maternal instincts in preparation of when she has her own calf

Yes but I meant which I didn’t state well so my apologies but I meant to say now that we bae more evidence that she’s likely not pregnant at the moment I won’t lie I’m getting awfully curious who the other 4 are now. I have a feeling some of them are first time are mostly likely mothers for whatever reason.

To be honest Ajani is kind of a wildcard as It’s kind of a wait and see at this point. You don’t need to apologize with Victoria, it’s something that’s both out of our control and I didn’t mean to be mean about it but more so just being honest when it comes to her and the likelihood of her having a calf but I agree she needs to be paired will a bull. Simuye hadn’t had a calf since 2009 which was Titan whereas Jeyai hasn’t had a calf since 2011 which was Omma. Fortunately for Jeyai she is pregnant now and is due in August 2023 which I presume you likely know by now. Litsemba is pregnant I agree but I don’t think she’s due early next year if she is. The reason I say that is because sometime last winter she mated Mabu and while I’m not saying she’s not pregnant now as she could very well be I’m just saying I don’t think it’ll be until 2024. Vui Musi could very well have gotten the job done and both Nolwazi and Amahle might also be potentially pregnant. I’m shocked about Disney too to be honest but you never know as maybe some of there females are pregnant currently. Honestly though, no one’s really going to know for sure who the other 4 that are pregnant for now anyway until the zoos themselves come forward. Frankly I didn’t think there’d be this many elephant pregnancies in the African Elephant Population at the moment currently until the news we heard yesterday.

Not to side track this thread but with the recent departure of the Franzen Africans it quite amazing to see the Florida private sector of elephants deplete greatly over the last 10 years. There are only 4 holders now when there was nearly a dozen a mere decade ago

I know Zoo Tampa seems to be out of the question for one of the pregnant females but after watching there last elephant focused episode where Sdudla is actively breeding with Mbali. They also stated that Mbali had irregular cycles but she and Matjeka will continue to spend time with Sdudla. I say theres a posibility for a calf from them.

The other two would have to be due in early 2024 (first three months) then, as it still takes around two to three months to discover the pregnancy.

Ohama is having their females give birth a year to a year and a half after another. So, it would make sense for Omma then to give birth in the first half of 2024; so there's a chance she may be in the very early stages of pregnancy. I don't think Omma would be separated from the herd for breeding too. Usually the bull would be grouped with the herd. It could've just been as simple as Omma was missed or Omma was elsewhere at the time; but not with Calee.

Wait ZooTampa is breeding their elephants again? I didn’t know even that but the fact they’re doing that again is great news!

In the video they were but I should clarify and that yes Omma and Callee are still at times in the same space with the herd but the zoo has also been giving them alone time separate from the herd but they go back with them as it’s only like a part of the day they’ve been doing that.

Last time I heard Sduldha wasn't mating with the girls. So that's wonderful to know!

I heard that too and it was very recently. You know what though I’m wondering now that we know Sdulha is mating again with the girls at ZooTampa that definitely raises the chances of some of those girls potentially getting pregnant or maybe even one of the six African Elephant Females currently pregnant in the United States. The timeline for these 6 births is 4 in 2023 and 2 in early 2024.

Yes, only last year.

If Sdulha is mating again that's great news as he's a proven bull, and Lowry Park's program has been quite a failure in recent years.

Irregular cycles can make it much harder (Especially for AI), but a bull should be able to mate with a cow no matter what.

It's been a decade now since Mbali conceived so it'll be ideal for her to conceive soon, especially considering her age. Matjeka too.

Im updating this list given light of new information with ZooTampa breeding their elephants again and with evidence regarding Omma most likely not currently pregnant, I’m updating my list of African Elephant females potentially or confirmed pregnant in the United States.
