Chester Zoo Chester 2011 #2

For those interested, I've posted some dinosaur photos in the Chester Zoo Gallery

They was still a lot of preparation work going on today. The dinosaurs are constructed of some sort of flexible foam-like material over a metal animatronic frame, which in turn is controlled by a nearby CPU. They're quiet when moving, but have various sound effects such as low grunts and moans, which seem to be troubling the flamingos a little. That said, they're only audible in the near vicinity. There's a small info booth on the Europe on the Edge (south) end and a Jurassic Park style gate being constructed on the Islands in Danger (north west) end opposite Lemur Island.

A new doorway into the Fountain Shop has been constructed on its northern corner to "encourage" visitors to buy related merchandise.

The T-rex is quite an impressive sight, especially when viewed from one of the staff canteen windows.

It has just been confirmed on facebook by the zoo that Kirana the female Tiger gave birth for the first time on Saturday. No more details as yet.

Great news!

Flipping Marvellous! Looking forward to photography the mini stripey one :)

I've got my fingers crossed that it all goes well obviously

Is this not abit early to make the announcement? Anything could happen to that little one in the next few days. Don't get me wrong it's great news but South Lakes got slated for doing exactly the same thing with their tiger cub!

I'm completely over the moon at this news!!! after the seeing that the viewing window into the house was boarded over on Saturday I gathered that there may be little stripes on the way but didn't expect it to be this soon!
Congrats to both Fabi and Kirana on this latest development and fingers tightly crossed that it/they? thrive/s :D :D :D

It may be because people were already writing on the Facebook page about it so they felt they had no choice? At least it's not Zoochatters getting the blame!

Myself and Zoogiraffe saw the cub for a split second yesterday (unfortunately no photos) quite late on as we had heard that it had been born. We were told by staff to keep the news quiet though until an official announcement was made, so I assume it was just because people were leaking the info on facebook they felt that, so to speak, the cat was out of the bag (though in fairness somebody was always going to see it and say something).

Kirana was grooming the cub at the front of the enclosure (mongoose end) under all of the foliage, so no views apart from the split second it peeped up from behind her. Fabi is still out with mother and cub, though he was at the window end.

Also saw one of the anteaters out and about, as well as a dik-dik, so all in all a very lucky day.

If this tiny cub is outdoors in miserable wet weather, I shouldn't think its chances are too good. Don't they confine the new mother to her den? Perhaps she'd be stressed by that?

I don't know what it's like where you are, but up here we've had belting weather yesterday and today, so I wouldn't say there's been a problem there. I don't know if it was out on Saturday, but I doubt it because it was miserable on that day!

For a first time mother, Kirana is doing very well it's normal she only had one cub and grooming is a way of establishing her bond with the cub.

I saw both Dik Dik's when I visited last week are they hard to see?

I find that Kirana and Fabi's bond is very strong and he is a very trust-worthy male so Kirana is/sounds like it is ok that Fabi is around still brilliant news!:D

Pretty poor/wet with us in the South today. My guess is they would be taking steps to make sure the cub is kept out of any wet weather though , if there was heavy rain.
