Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News 2014

The Cleveland Zoos Reticulated Python is currently off exhibit after it stopped eating. The snake is improving while it stays in the zoos vet facility and could return to its exhibit soon.

The zoos lone male Gharial has been sent to the Fort Worth Zoo on a breeding loan.

A large group of high ranking zoo brass including Zoo Director Dr. Chris Kuhar and general curator Andi Kornak walked the zoos ticket plaza today. They all had blueprints and maps and from what I gathered they were discussing a revamped main zoo entrance. This coincides with recent conversations I've had with multiple keepers who expect big changes to be coming soon.

The reticulated python, who is a female, is back on exhibit

I hope the mastodons by Schrekengost are at the new entrance

Kitra a 12 yr old female Sumatran Orangutan will soon be heading to the Oregon Zoo.

Cleveland has Borneans not Sumatrans. Tiram and Kayla will be going through empty nest syndrome. Kera Wak is still their, but she is not their biological child. I will miss my little girl. Is there any news of anyone moving in with Daniel's and now Kitra's departure? If my beloved Kayla has another kid now with Tiram, lets hope for a girl. Their sons have been naughty little boys.

Your right about them being Bornean and not Sumatran in Cleveland. With the Oregon Zoo exhibiting Sumatrans it makes it possible that Portland is not where Kitra is sent. However we'll stand by the fact that she is moving somewhere in the near future since we've hear it from several reliable sources.

Portland has a female Sumatran who is over 50. The male died last year. I do not know if they have any others. It would be that Kitra will be a companion or she will be a start to a new Bornean group at Portland to replace the Sumatran group. I will miss my little girl.

What started as routine maintenance on the zoos Rainforest tree staircase has turned into a major structural problem which keeps the structure closed.

New Single-Day Attendance Set!

Thanks to The Cleveland Foundation's 100th-anniversary gift of free admission to the zoo for the community at-large, CMZ set a new, single-day admission record of 35,701 people, breaking the old record by over 11,000 people (...24,746 on 13 June 2011).

The weather was cool, but nice, and I truly hope everyone had fun; I hope the experience garners even more interest for the park, but despite it's size, I cannot fathom a crowd of that size inside the park. I know traffic and parking issues snarled the area, but I have to believe things reached the "too crowded to be fun" level. Having said that, most of the media feedback appears to be very positive, so, what do I know...? :)

The attendance is bad enough on Free Zoo Mondays. I know the zoo is spread out, but it had to be like sardines in most places. The former SeaWorld of Ohio used to close when attendance got up to somewhere between 25,000 to 30,000. I know what Akron was like last July. I expect is was like that, but on a grander scale. I am so happy I went to Pittsburgh and not CMZ today. I want to know is all the food places and gift shops were open. Some of them do not open until Memorial Day weekend. I am just happy the carousel wasn't open yet. It probably would have been worn out.

The Zoos two Snow leopard exhibits have been tarped off for breeding purposes.
