Elmwood Park Zoo Elmwood Park Zoo News

I don't really have a strong opinion on zoo animal names, but I felt like those were a little weird. I would have called them something like "Inca" or "Andes", myself.

The zoo is going to be closed for January and February. The zoo received a $30 million anonymous gift (!) and will be building the new animal hospital / welcome center building starting in January, in hopes of having it complete by 2024 (their 100th anniversary). To build it, they'll need to tear down the current entrance and gift shop, so they'll be closing to get started on that and then using a new, temporary entrance away from the construction starting in March. The zoo does have a second entrance but it's at the opposite end of the park, away from the parking lots.

On March 10th, the zoo announced they are reopening to the public on March 18th, and will remain closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

While under construction, the zoo has added 1.0 White-faced Whistling Duck, 0.1 Reeves’ Muntjac, 2.0 Golden Pheasants, 2.0 Lady Amherst’s Pheasants, 1.0 Himalayan Monal, 2.0 Mandarin Ducks, and 1.1 Falcated Teal, along with the previously mentioned alpacas.

The White-faced Whistling Duck has been added to Harmony Hideaway, while the Asian animals have been added to the two aviaries outside of Habitat HQ (the eagles have been moved to the previous ocelot enclosure in Trail of the Jaguar.)

The bobcat has been moved to Trail of the Jaguar, while the pair-bonded turkey vulture and red-tailed hawk are back on exhibit in his old enclosure.

So the ocelot is in the first exhibit on the right in trail of the jaguar, bobcat in the second, and the eagles in the outdoor one on the left? I assume they'll rotate the bobcat and ocelot like they did before with the cougars.

So far I have only seen Mateo in the middle indoor room but I assume so.

Chuck, the southern tamandua, is now in the vestibule in Harmony Hideaway because he was tearing up the walls in Habitat HQ. He now has boxes to destroy in his new exhibit, so hopefully he can go a while without tearing up the walls.

Additionally, the zoo is now offering bison feedings about one day a week. There’s no scheduled day and time for it. It is now for free because the zoo now only has one bison and even in the past, it’s been a challenge sometimes for the bison to come over and eat.

Does anyone know what is going on with the tiger exhibit? I know projects always run behind, but the funds were donated several years ago and it sounded like it should have been completed by now, but there doesn't seem to be any more talk about it and they put up a sign that construction on the new North America section will begin soon.
