Native to Indonesia, yet born in L.A., the Zoo’s Komodo dragon hatchlings are playing a significant role in the conservation initiatives around the world! 21 eggs successfully hatched between August 3 and August 12, making a total of 43 Komodo dragons born at the L.A. Zoo. The young lizards have been sent to zoos to help enhance the genetic pool and Komodo breeding programs in North America and Europe. Dragons can also be expected to be sent to Australia, Italy, Denmark, U.K., Czech Republic, Germany.
Fewer than 10 zoos in North America have successfully bred Komodos. Wild Komodo dragons are found on only a few islands in Indonesia and are the world’s largest lizard. The Los Angeles Zoo’s adult Komodos can be viewed by the public in the “Dragon’s of Komodo” exhibit (#4 on your map). The hatchlings are being cared for off-exhibit.
