There is a new video of the zoo's giant otter pups learning to swim.

The zoo also posted some information in Facebook about where the new Komodo Dragon hatchlings might be going.

Native to Indonesia, yet born in L.A., the Zoo’s Komodo dragon hatchlings are playing a significant role in the conservation initiatives around the world! 21 eggs successfully hatched between August 3 and August 12, making a total of 43 Komodo dragons born at the L.A. Zoo. The young lizards have been sent to zoos to help enhance the genetic pool and Komodo breeding programs in North America and Europe. Dragons can also be expected to be sent to Australia, Italy, Denmark, U.K., Czech Republic, Germany.

Fewer than 10 zoos in North America have successfully bred Komodos. Wild Komodo dragons are found on only a few islands in Indonesia and are the world’s largest lizard. The Los Angeles Zoo’s adult Komodos can be viewed by the public in the “Dragon’s of Komodo” exhibit (#4 on your map). The hatchlings are being cared for off-exhibit.

The 2012 annual conference of AZAD (Association of Zoo & Aquarium Docents) is being hosted by the Los Angeles Zoo. It will be the first week of October.

There will be an opening night reception at the Page Museum (aka La Brea Tarpits), presumably after it is closed to the public. The only AZAD conference I have attended, National Zoo DC in 2005, did a similar thing. After hours opening reception and dessert at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum.

Here is a page on the 2012 conference. It is mainly for American and Canadian docents, but according to the replies on this link it looks like they might get some Australian zoo volunteers this time!

On my visit to the zoo today, I was happy to see that the waterfall and stream have been repaired in the gorilla habitat. It adds a nicer touch to the exhibit.

That is great news! Interesting that the zoo did not need to close the exhibit at all to repair the problem.

Thanks for the update mstickmanp. I wonder what the sex of the baby Orangutan is? And now they're considering a January opening date for LAIR. On my visit to the zoo last Friday, LAIR seems to be coming along very nicely. Finally, the wait for reptiles on display again is almost over.

I hoping for a female. I'm just happy that the once critically ill Minyak is a father once again and hopefully will become a father a third time with the new female that recently arrived. Hopefully Berani will be a good big sister to the new baby.

I'm also glad that the LAIR is close to opening! You don't even know how many times I heard complaints from patrons while volunteering because the zoo didn't have a reptile house...

Former Guns N Roses guitarist and longtime LA Zoo contributor Slash weighs in on the Zanesville incident via twitter "I get the situation, but there's no way it was totally necessary to exterminate 49 loose exotic animals in Ohio"
