Guess the species? #1

Chlidonias has taken this opportunity to display his crap photos!

:p

Hix

The one chance I've had to get them right, and I can't identify a single one. :D Not a bird expert, this one here.

(edit)
WAIT! Is the one on the bottom a thick-billed parrot!?

(edit again)
No, no, no, no... Not even close. They don't have yellow caps and blue on the wing...

this was the reason I kept the photos of "the ones that got away"!! And I've got more crap photos to come later!!!

The tail isn't long enough, but I'll say it any way:
1. Crimson Rosella
2. Orange-bellied parrot
3. Superb parrot
one of these is right ;)

@AnaheimZoo: keep trying until you get them

1. Pesquet's parrot
2. Orangebellied Parrot
3. Yellowfronted Kakariki

:p

Hix

Hix has two of the parrots correct. Now we just need someone to guess the other one correctly and put all three names into one post.....

Parrots especially australian are not my best subject but I'll say

Pesquets Parrot
Orange-bellied Parrot
Orange-fronted Parakeet, Cyanoramphus malherbi

Pesquet's parrot is a scary bird! I saw them in Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. Scary but beautiful.

So we all agree on the second one, and the third one seems to be a problem. The list of small green parrots to choose from is indeed quite long! We might be here for a while. :D

to clear things up a little, Hix had the second two right and the first one wrong, so:

1) still a mystery
2) orange-bellied parrot (which nanoboy guessed correctly first)
3) yellow-crowned kakariki (AnaheimZoo also has these correct because yellow-crowned parakeet is the same species)

Whoever can finish off the quiz gets to post the next photos (and as a hint, it honestly is a very common Australian parrot)

My wife has guessed "Australian King Parrot". I think she is right. :)

The lighting is bad, or to quote her "it's a horrible photo". :)

a horrible photo my foot! If its so horrible why did it take so long for someone to get it....oh wait! :D

Yes it is an Australian king parrot, and nanoboy wins it. Actually the photo was taken from a distance through mesh when I was outside a walk-through aviary and the king parrot was inside. The bird before it flew: http://www.zoochat.com/395/australian-king-parrot-alisterus-scapularis-218990/

(And for the sake of completeness, the orange-bellied parrot was photographed at Melaleuca and the yellow-crowned kakariki on Motuara Island, both of them being wild birds)

Hooray! I'll get some crazy difficult pics soon, like the Bali Mynah. :D

My wife is excited to choose and crop pics. I suspect it might be something as difficult as a sulphur-crested cockatoo. :D

So here are a few of my wife's choosing, and cropped to her specifications. She thinks they will be difficult. (Is there a rolling eyes smiley that I can use? Maybe this will suffice.)

!) polar bear
2) er, meerkat? But it looks gibbon-y
3) dromedary
4) giraffe
5) an antelopey sort of thing... I'll say blackbuck

Is your second guess a meerkat or gibbon?

Either way, you have a few correct and a few wrong. I'll be vague for now.

can't it be both? But I'll stick with meerkat.

*Also I can't have a few correct and a few wrong, because there's only five photos :p

I didn't want to use the word "couple" because then people would have thought "two". ;)

I'll leave it open until tomorrow morning (Melbourne time), and we'll see how the guesses evolve.

1. polar bear
2. call me crazy... it looks kind of hedgehog-y/tenrec-y with the head of a meerkat
3. dromedary
4. i don't want to copy chlidonias but what other animal has ears like that besides okapi? giraffe :p
5. the eye looks like that of a blackbuck, but the whole cropped picture looks like a waterbuck to me. I'm indecisive...

1. Polar Bear
2. Meerkat
3. Llama ?
4. Giraffe
5. Impala

I agree the third looks like a dromedary (and when you see a disgusting mouth dromedary is usually the first thing that springs to mind), but I'm trying to think laterally here.
