Apenheul Primate Park Apenheul Primate Park News

Yes, another one died in 2012. Of the 3, now just one is alive. Which is just terrible. I don`t have enough information to judge if the conditions in Europe are at fault or if these two had died anywhere, but I feel this is the end of the try to re-establish proboscis monkeys in Europe.

Oh dear that is very unfortunate. There were such high hopes that Apenheul could form a new breeding nucleus and help establish the species studbook with Singapore. Are there any plans to send the remaining male back to Singapore?

@Yassa: I presume you're right, but I still hope it will not go this way.

There were also examples where Proboscis Monkey lived for many years in European Zoos (to mention one: Stuttgart).

For every one (like me) who have seen, how fast the natural environment of those monkeys is going to be destroyed, must have an interest to establish a captive population, also outside of their range (as Singapore already does) and maybe even outside Southeast Asia (think at diseases).

In the case of Apenheul I wonder a.) how old those males have been?; b.) if there was an knowledge-exchange with keepers/curators with PM experiences beside Singapore, means Stuttgart, New York or Basle?; c.) what kind of food/leaves they have used?;
(No assumption, but it could MAYBE give us a clue).

Also: Is it correct that those monkeys died only after they got allowed to use their outside exhibit?

@zoomaniac, Apenheul keepers and the curator have visited Singapore well in advance of the arrival of the monkeys to the Netherlands, to learn the husbandry and the first weeks/months Singapore keepers were present in Apenheul

All the males in Apenheul are/were around 11 years old

The monkeys died after being allowed to go outside, but they were already allowed to use their island in the months after the arrival

Now some better news from Apenheul :
A Red howlermonkey ( Alouatta seniculus ) born. Apenheul started keeping this species spring 2012 with 1male and 2 females and this is aslo their first baby.
Only 2 other European zoos are keeping this species :
Cologne Germany several breeding groups
Aquazoo Leeuwarden the Netherlands newly formed pair

A second wooly monkey born in a relative short time. This second one was born March 20 and the mother is Lena.

This week this years first Squirrel monkeys have been born. Thats quite early because normaly the birthing-seison starts at the end of May or beginning June. Apenheul is home to one of the largest Squirrel monkey-colonies worldwide.
Also born no less then 5 Ring-tailed lemurs within one week time.

as a translation: about 2 weeks ago the second red howler monkey female also gave birth, the group now consists of 1,2 + 2 newborns.

Can confirm this- I was at Apenhuel on the 11th April and both female red howlers were carrying young. A very pleasant surprise :D

@DesertRhino, can we expect reviews of your dutch zoo visits? I would be very glad to hear about your thoughts of Apenheul, Blijdorp and the (possible) rest (Burgers, Artis ???)

You can expect reviews in due course (after I have finished the uni assignment I had to do on the trip). The four zoos we visited were Blijdorp, Apenhuel, Amersfoort and Burgers.

Tread carefully, or you'll get dragged into the age-old, difficult to decide, Blijdorp versus Burgers debate.:D

More seriously, having visited three of those four last year (and loved them), I look forward to your perspectives in due course.

Apenheul has shipped 2 (1.1) sifaka to France
