Detroit Zoo Detroit Zoo

About 40 wild breeding pairs of black-crowned night herons have taken up residence at the Detroit Zoo. Their rookery is located behind Sweet Treats across from the new crocodile habitat.

@JBZBONGO: If the zoo did get pygmy hippos, where would they be on exhibit? would they do a mix species exhibit in the old river hippo exhibit with the African slender-snouted crocodiles. that would be cool. and did you ever find out what species of eland they have now?

I don't know about the hippos... I think they would replace the crocodiles in a few years. For the eland... I'm pretty sure they're Giant eland, but I don't know. I will be going to the zoo in a few weeks and I will post pictures.

Is the new crocodile exhibit open ?

The zoo has 2 common eland and there both still in quarantine. They will be in with the warthogs and they will be out mid July. The zoo got back to me on Facebook. What happened to the tapirs? What exhibit were they in?

I saw you post that on Facebook! Lol!

The design firm Jones & Jones has posted a video of their design for the future Penguin and Puffin Conservation Center at the Detroit Zoo. It looks like a game-changer for this type of exhibit! Perhaps the most unique feature is a swimming pool for visitors that adjoins an outdoor exhibit pool!

The new exhibit looks like it will be amazing. The pool were the visitors can enter water aand view the penguins in water is also at the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat in Canada.

This will almost definately make it in at least America's top 5 penguin exhibits. Along with Cochrane Polar Bear exhibit, it is like Discovery Cove's experience with the Asian Small-Clawed Otters at Freshwater Oasis.

Designs are absolutley incredible which comes as no surprise from the designers who also brought Detroit Arctic Ring Of Life and the Amphibian Conservation Center.Does anyone have a timeline on this or any info on where its to be built? We would assume it would be built right on site of the old Penguinarium which was also state of the art when it opened back in 1968.No doubt if this gets built anything close to whats in the video its certainly going to be the best penguin exhibit at least in the US (currently we feel St Louis holds the honor of best)We need to check out this exhibit mentioned by Tropic in Canada.

That looks really cool! Is the underwater tunnel a first when it comes to viewing penguins? I don't know of any in the U.S. but are there any penguin exhibits in Europe that have this?

We found another video:
Which looks to be an older version of the concept posted by geomorph
